Quantitative evaluation of thixotropy-governed microfabric evolution in soft clays

چکیده
Thixotropy-governed temporal microfabric evolution, in a naturally occurring illitic marine clay and manufactured kaolinitic at their respective liquid limits, was probed quantitatively by both one-dimensional X-ray diffraction (1DXRD) 2DXRD via orientation index (OI) texture (TI) respectively. Results showed that the two fabric indexes, OI TI, continuously evolved nonmonotonically but consistently during thixotropic hardening periods of up to 125 days. Due initial remolding-induced large-strain shearing, clays started with consisting highly parallel-oriented particles. With increasing time, varied from 23.1 36.6 3.8 4.5, while TI ranged from1.004 1.008 1.010 1.029 for clays, Moreover, same trend changes between indicated XRD-based techniques are applicable characterizing soft undergoing hardening. The evolution may result various microscale particle rearrangements, likely including reorientation, aggregation, flocculation, which turn controlled interparticle forces. also discussed terms advantages can expectedly shed light on similar studies time-dependent behavior clays.
